But this guy wants you to eliminate - for the sake of brevity I’ll list the biggies - bread of all kinds, sugar (duh), eggs, all animal protein, all oils except raw nuts, dairy including cheese, salt. Can ya’ll do that? Sure? Then say goodbye to diabetes.
Travel frequently? Well, be sure to bring your Golden Austrian Cauliflower Soup with you; as you need to eat it, or a handful of other salt free carrot juice containing others, daily for lunch. Grab a salad for dinner? Be sure to make Tofu Ranch for a dressing. Or, as the book suggests, pour a few tablespoons of your soup on top to dress your salad. Again, remember, no fat. No salt. No egg. No animal protein. Read: no pizza, no burger, no meals out, no friggin chicken breast on a green salad with olive oil & vinegar for chrissake.

I hardly ever write reviews but I feel compelled to share my wife, Robyn''s, experience after five weeks on Dr. Fuhrman''s diet. At 190 pounds and 5'' 8", she was about 50 pounds overweight. She had been on Glipizide for diabetes, Atenolol and Lisinopril for high blood pressure, and Gemfibrozil for high triglycerides. Her last A1C was 9.5; well in the danger zone for diabetics. Most of her fasting blood glucose readings were above 200.

After the initial five weeks, she is off all of those medications. Her last blood pressure reading was 117/78. Her fasting glucose hovers around 90-100. She has already lost 15 pounds as well.

Tonight, we decided to have a cheat meal. She ate a full filet of salmon with two cobs of corn and a full cup of great northern beans with onions and garlic. This is a meal with nearly 100 carbs that should have sent her blood glucose soaring. Two hours after this meal her blood glucose was 97! We didn''t believe that was possible so we measured it a second time and it was 94.

Needless to say, tomorrow we will be back on this diet permanently with only an infrequent special occasion to interrupt it. The food is satisfying and the results are phenomenal!

If you suffer from type 2 diabetes but are willing to dedicate yourself to this diet, make no mistake, it will reverse your disease and give you a great chance at a long, complication-free life.

8-17-2016 UPDATE

New test results from recent blood work:

Triglycerides six week ago - 259. Now 110
Total cholesterol six weeks ago - 193. Now 173.
A1C six weeks ago - 8.9. Now 7.3. (Since A1C is a three month average that 7.3 is taking into account the prior two months of pre-diet eating. When adjusted for that, it actually would be an A1C for the last month of around 5.0.)
Blood pressure: 118 over 72.

All without medication and only four weeks on the diet!

Take home I got is to eat a more plant based diet. Limit meats- eat more beans/nuts... Cut the refined carbs. Eat fruit... there is a membership to this doc''s website, but I decided not to get it bc the docs recipes are not practical and the membership is pricey.

This book has totally changed my life! I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in early October. After seeing my results online, I was on Amazon looking at diabetic cookbooks as I knew I was going to have to totally change my diet. I came across this book and the title caught my eye. I read what I could online and immediately had it sent to my Kindle so I could begin reading it right away. When I received the diagnosis, I refused to go on medication and allow this diagnosis to control my life. I started this eating plan on October 14th. In 6 weeks my A1C dropped my 11% to 6.9%! I had also lost 30 pounds. My doctor was amazed and I am on no medication. It was a little hard at first, because I was used to eating a lot of fast food, cookies, crackers etc.. and I knew this would be a big change for me. But when you begin to understand what all the bad food is doing to your body, it gives you a whole new understanding. Though a couple of times at the beginning I was tempted to not continue I had to remind myself what was at stake. Either go on medication to "manage" my diabetes or totally changed my eating lifestyle and not be on any medication. I also had my lipid panel checked again on Jan. 12th, and my cholesterol numbers have completely reversed and are amazing and my blood pressure is also great. I have lost a total of 40 pounds and am no longer shopping "plus size" clothes. Several people at work have commented on my weight loss and have asked me what I''m doing. I have shared this book with so many people including my two sisters and the nurse at my Dr.s office also wanted to know what I was doing. If you have type 2 diabetes, you need to buy this book! It will totally change your life!

Chances are you are reading this review because you received some not-so-pleasant news about your health and you are looking for help. But you want to see how others have fared before you. BUY THIS BOOK. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes several years ago. I always thought as long as I took my medication and watched what I ate, I would be okay. That worked for a while but as bad eating habits slowly worsened, my weight crept up along with the blood sugar readings. Six months ago I was on the maximum dose of Metformin and my blood sugar was still running close to 200. At that point my doctor put me on insulin, first 20 units per day. I started to put on weight and my blood sugar continued to rise. I then went to 30 units and finally 45. I put on 25 pounds and my blood sugar readings were in the 220 – 250 range. Occasionally I’d get a reading of 150, but those were few and far in between. Oh yeah, BUY THIS BOOK!

Three weeks ago I checked my blood sugar in the morning and it read 303. That was with Metformin and insulin. I was ready to go out of my mind, but then realized I needed to do something fast. I know some of what diabetes can do to a person and I didn’t want that to happen. I went to Amazon and looked for books on diabetes and Dr. Furhman’s book was one of the first ones I saw. By the way, BUY THIS BOOK! Reversing diabetes sounded great to me but it almost seemed too good to be true. The number of enthusiastic reviews I read convinced me that this book could be a life changer and life saver.

Dr. Fuhrman gives you everything you ever wanted to know about diabetes: what causes it, what your medication is doing to you and what you need to do to reverse it. It was an eye-opener and a little bit scary. He also briefly covers a few other popular diets and identifies their pitfalls. Dr. Fuhrman’s approach is mostly “greens and beans” and he gives you all of the medical reasoning behind it. In case you didn’t read it earlier: BUY THIS BOOK!

I’ve been transitioning to his program gradually and did not go full throttle from Day 1. Accordingly, my results thus far are not as dramatic as some. But when I compare the two week period since I started the program to the prior two week period, my blood sugar has dropped an average of 70 points and I’ve lost six pounds. Dr. Fuhrman’s book has given me the tools to get back to a healthy life. It is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. If you’re looking for a solution for your diabetes issues, BUY THIS BOOK!

I''ve been diabetic since 2007 and have always had trouble controlling my sugars. After many, many years of trying this or that, this is eating plan (notice I don''t call it a diet) is working for me. The photos show my readings at the start and after a little over a week of eating as Dr. Fuhrman suggests and wow, what a difference.
I will be honest and say I did not follow his plan to the letter, but even the small changes I made, made a huge impact. I am still taking insulin, but as he said in his book, I had to adjust my meds within the first week. I was on 14 units of Humalog with meals and that barely covered them so often I would have to increase the dosage. Now, I am now at 5 units per meal. After - ONLY - one- week!
I have not seen a 107 since I was diagnosed even with insulin & metformin therapy. My morning numbers, that true sign of blood sugar control, have dropped about 40 points. As I said, I haven''t been following his book to the letter, but this next week I will. I am curious to see how my morning numbers adjust and will follow up this review in a week.

This eating plan has been easy to follow, I love veggies anyway and I''ve noticed my cravings for sugar and bread have dropped off. Normally my morning drive to work is entertained by thoughts of donuts and biscuits, but I''ve not craved a single sugary treat after about day 2. His approach of making every meal nutrient dense I think is what does the trick. If your body is getting what it needs, it doesn''t crave the junk. While I do love veggies, it''s been easier for me to increase them by making soups and smoothies. The soups make me feel like I am getting comfort food and the smoothies are like treats. I have had to keep my protein intake via meats a bit more than he suggests, but it''s been lean protein - 90% fish and a little chicken.
So, if you are struggling with your blood sugar, this is definitely a plant to try.

Have lifestyle diseases - diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease? Well, if you care to take control of your health, then this book along with Dr. Neal Barnard''s book on the same subject will change your life for the better.

It''s vegan, period. You''ll learn to love tofu and all the ways to prepare leafy greens. Onions, garlic and spices make it delicious.

Maybe you''ll finally really learn to cook, because steamed vegetables are boring. Trust us, roast that tofu and veg like cauliflower and eggplant for amazing flavors. Learn how to make your own spicy black bean burgers and baked tofu. Soups and bean stews can be taste extravaganzas as Thai, Indian and other vegan southeast Asian cuisines have already taught us.

Dr. Fuhrman phases diabetics into taking control of their blood glucose through diet AND exercise. Phase 1 is the most difficult for everyone who''s enjoyed the indulgent lifestyle that lead to a type 2 diabetic diagnosis.

Want to live? Then own it and get real - you''ll have to change what and how you eat along with moving your a$$. Period.

Phase 2 allows some more foods from that distant past when you thought that there would never be an end to it. However, if you reduce or get off of your meds altogether, what''s allowed in the phase 2 diet won''t really interest your taste buds. Seriously,

THIS IS SCIENCE. It''s not some weird fad diet like Atkins or whatever else is out there. Drs. Fuhrman & Barnard have decades and decades of data from all sorts of NIH supported and independent clinical scientific studies to support their simple claim, "You are what you eat." They also have amazing data from longitudinal studies that none of the pharmaceutical companies bother to cite. Yes, their claims are backed by tens of thousands of people who participated in these studies. No lie.

Both Fuhrman & Barnard''s books unequivocally demonstrate the abject failures of the diabetes ''industry''. Yes, it''s an institutionalized industry of collusion between big pharma and uninformed medical professionals that include physicians, counselors, diabetic educators and the entire spectrum of diabetic professionals supported by big pharma to advance pharmaceutical treatments that ultimately fail patients and result in early death. Yah, read these two books and weep.

For all of the armchair ''scientists'' who slam these books from their anecdotal ''evidence'', we bet that you didn''t bother to work with your medical team or really follow the recommended eating plans. Good luck with that, because going vegan pales in comparison to what''s in store down the road for diabetics who rely solely on medications to manage their diabetes - significantly shorter lives, blindness, possible limb amputations, kidney failure, heart disease - thanks to a pharmaceutical/medical model that would rather heap on the meds and not talk about some very dramatic required lifestyle changes - diet and exercise - that could make diabetics med free, along with all of the other significant health benefits of this vegan diet.

The big caveat: let your medical team know that you''re adopting this lifestyle change. If you decide to make these changes for your long-term well being, then take these books to your next appointment.

It''s easier to have the books on hand during the conversation than it is to argue with a group of well educated people who think that they know more than you do. You''re all supposed to work together. They''ll need to know what you''re doing so that they can correctly manage your meds without killing you by over medicating you as you lose weight and watch your blood glucose drop like a stone.

If you get push back from your current medical team, then find a different one. It''s more work to manage a patient who takes a real interest in his/her well-being than it is to dispense pharmaceuticals.

Oh, and my anecdotal evidence? My numbers say it all. This worked better than I could have imagined and, well, changed my life.

Being an over 60 overweight diabetic (type 2) I thought that I would purchase the book and see what I could get out of it. About that time I went to my doctor for a check-up and my blood test results were so bad that I was told that I should be on diabetic medication. I told the nurse about the book and what my plans were and prevailed upon her to allow me to get myself sorted out by my next check-up and she agreed. As soon as I stated reading the book, it had a profound effect on me where I started making wiser food choices. I found the book incredibly interesting and I very much embraced the teachings of Dr Fuhrman and over a period of six months I lost 17 kilos. For many months previously I had a pronounced limp due to a painful arthritic left knee which has now almost completely disappeared. I have put eating meat on the back-burner and I will carry on with Dr Fuhrman''s advice of eating plenty of greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds. But when I made the first one i.e. zuccini lasagne, I was over the moon ....it was so tasty so tasty as if never before I have tasted such delicious food in my life. My husband loved it. Imagine no pasta lasagne recipe. She is awesome awesome . Well I can go on praising Joel Furhman, this is the best book ever.

If I''d wished to become a vegan then this book might well have gained a high rating. However the menues are explicitly vegan and not to my taste. Be aware of this in considering this book.
