Description

Product Description

From the New York Times bestselling author of Roses comes "epic storytelling that plunges the reader headfirst" into the fate of heiress Samantha Gordon and ranch hand Nathan Holloway as their lives collide in early 1900s Texas. (Jackie K Cooper, The Huffington Post)

Texas in the early 1900s was on the cusp of an oil boom that, unbeknownst to its residents, would spark a period of dramatic changes and economic growth. In the midst of this transformative time in Southern history, two unforgettable characters emerge and find their fates irrevocably intertwined: Samantha Gordon, the privileged heiress to the sprawling Las Tres Lomas cattle ranch near Fort Worth, and Nathan Holloway, a sweet-natured and charming farm boy from far north Texas.

As changes sweep the rustic countryside, Samantha and Nathan''s connection drives this narrative compulsively forward as they love, lose, and betray. In this grand yet intimate novel, Meacham once again delivers a heartfelt, big-canvas story full of surprising twists and deep emotional resonance.

Review

"The finest historical fiction not only entertains but teaches readers something about an era not their own, and this novel offers a stellar crash course in Texas history...The novel has it all: a wide cast of characters, pitch-perfect period detail, romance, plenty of drama, and skeletons in the closet (literally). Saga fans will be swooning."
Booklist (starred review)

"Equals and perhaps surpasses Roses...It has everything any reader could want in a book...epic storytelling that plunges the reader headfirst into the plot...[Meacham] is a titan herself."― Jackie K Cooper, Book Critic, The Huffington Post

"Emotionally resounding...Texas has never seemed grander...as a mammoth human filled with longing and ambition...Meacham''s easy-to-read prose helps to maintain a pace that you won''t be able to quit, pushing through from chapter to chapter to find the next important nugget of this dramatic family tale. It is best savored over a great steak with a glass of wine and evenings to yourself."― BookReporter

"Meacham crafts a grand Texas family epic, by way of Dickens...the explosive plot elements...collide in a satisfying climax...the final paragraph is practically perfection."― Lone Star Literary Life

"A novel about family love and retribution as much as wealth or ambition. What makes Titans successful is how skillfully the author involves readers in the characters'' lives, and keeps us reading, as we watch the plot play out."― Historical Novel Society

" Roses heralded as the new Gone with the Wind."― USA Today (Praise for Roses)

"Reads like a high-end Thorn Birds."― Sara Nelson, The Daily Beast (praise for Roses)

"As large, romantic, and American a tale as Texas itself."― Booklist (praise for Roses)

"An enthralling stunner....A compelling saga with echoes of Gone with the Wind."― Publishers Weekly (praise for Roses)

About nine years ago, a friend and I decided to read 52 books together over the course of a year. We each chose 26 titles and drew out of a bowl, the order in which they would be read. Rose''s was our second book. My friend chose it because it was a title she received from the book of the month club and was on her to read pile. It became an instant favorite for both of us. We recommended it to anyone who asked for a book recommendation, and some who did not ask. Titans, for me, fits that same criteria-instant favorite. This book grabbed me from the beginning and didn''t let go. Even before I finished it, I was recommending it to people I thought would enjoy it. I truly hope they read it and do enjoy it.

I can''t really go into particulars about the story. I fear that may give it away. Just know that for this avid reader, the characters and the storyline were completely engrossing and engaging. There is only one character who is unlikable - you''ll know who she is straight away...

Grab a cup of tea and a comfy spot and enjoy!

Once again Leila Meacham has created an epic saga: using perfectly correct English, she has birthed a circular, emotional, mysterious tale that compels the attention of the reader from page one, right through to the very last period. The reader is drawn into the action on all levels, anticipating (not always correctly) what comes next; in a setting with numerous people, the reader is able to feel the emotions of all parties involved: fear, frustration, love, hate, guilt, openness, and a myriad of other emotions. In my review of SOMERSET, her novel before TITANS, I stated my opinion that she permitted the reader to “be a fly on the wall” and that beautiful talent is again displayed in TITANS. The characters in this latest drama dwell in various socio-economic levels, and the emphasis is that, although most of us hide behind a self-imposed façade, we all pretty much share the same basic hopes and fears, loves and hates, pettiness and graciousness, etc.

As an aside, I have spent my career working in the “oil industry” and Meacham has nailed the excitement, anticipation, and fear of all parties involved in an oil exploration venture. Further, her extensive knowledge of Texas agriculture, ranching, and weather is very impressive, but her knowledge of the railroad systems in Texas in those days is superior to most (except maybe landmen).

Sara Lynn Robbins, the wonderful person to whom Ms. Meacham dedicates this book, was a very good friend of mine and introduced me to Leila’s works; I, too, love and miss our mutual friend. Sara Lynn, a paleontologist, was in touch with Leila during the time she was writing this book, and wherever she is, Sara is celebrating Leila’s success in describing an exciting time in the history of Texas, including some of the romance of the oil industry. Thanks Leila, for the great book and the dedication to our FANTASTIC friend.

This is a great book, but it is not a mystery thriller, a spy novel, a detective who done it novel, or an X rated love story. It is just fantastic literature. The title itself refers back to Greek mythology and the ancient gods who ruled before the Olympians. These giants were the children of Uranus and Gaea, or heaven and earth. This is not a book about Greek mythology, however. It is a book about mortal giants of incredible strength and knowledge...not necessarily physical strength. It is about people who are very powerful and influential in certain fields...thus the title Titans.
It is also a book about families, parents, sisters, brothers, friends, and foes. The author says it best when she said, "Key players make wrong decisions based on what they believe to be the right reasons. These always result in life changes, often tragic. The characters must then either deal with the consequences or find a way out of the dilemma. ''Crises defines us." In them, we discover who we are."
This is such an accurate description of the characters in this book. They are caught in their own web of "good intentions."
The novel''s setting is in Texas during the early 1900''s and right before the huge oil boom. It begins with the birth of twins and one is given away because the mother does not want two. Now what? These two children become the core of the novel. They grow up living in different towns, but very close to each other and yet never knew the other existed. Until...
It is also a story of friendships, love, betrayal, and loyalty. You name it, and it has it. It is just a great read about life and how we handle ourselves in our various dilemmas.
If you enjoy good literature, you''ll like it. I would also recommend Roses also by Leila Meacham. Both are fantastic!

Loved this book. Characters were easy to follow and background of early Texas ranching and oil history was very interesting. I especially loved the hook when a somewhat unscrupulous character turned good guy. Sweet story about adoptive children finding their roots yet not compromising the family who raised them. And the siblings finding each other warmed my heart. This book held my attention throughout and was easy to formulate a picture in my mind of each character. Very well written.

I greatly enjoyed Titans! Meacham weaves together the lives of three families and brings it all to a satisfying and thorough conclusion. Filled with complicated family histories and challenging family relationships, Titans delivers on several levels, which is why I give it 5 stars. The plot is fully developed, the characters are not predictable but they are relatable, and the way the story comes together is seamless. I highly recommend it for historical fiction fans. I would also recommend Roses by Meacham.

This book was very much like Roses and Tumbleweeds to me. It was just an enjoyable story of people and how their lives intertwined. The prologue has a woman giving birth to twins who are separated at that time, and the rest is the story of what happens to them. There is no mystery or suspense here, just a family saga with the usual romance and almost find out then don''t intrigue, but it was a good solid enjoyable read to me.

This is a wonderful story of a Texas family during the very early 1900’s heady days of oil discovery. The storyline is the heart wrenching and heart warming past that threatens to divide two families.
This book also delves into the adoption process or lack thereof in accordance with the time period.
As an adoptive parent, this story confirmed what I already knew, it is about the love which goes into adopting a baby and raising the child who becomes your own in every way. It also is in keeping with my lifelong belief, parenthood does not begin “in the backseat of a Chevy”, it begins in the heart and continues from the moment you hold your baby.
